Dominica - not the Dominican Republic - is hidden treasure and perfect for a immersive experience in the Caribbean rain forest and rugged mountains. Known as "The Nature Isle" is a sparsely populated island with many rivers, waterfalls, snorkeling, ... whale watching, and a few beaches. Springhold was created to grow a community-run experiential learning center. Completely off-grid, the aim is to connect people with self-reliant, sustainable living practices. We use permaculture principles to grow a lot of our food. Our property is abundant with bananas, tropicals fruits and veggies. We have on property natural spring-fed drinking water and ponds; chickens, rabbits and fish; solar electricty; and a great view of the sunset over the ocean from the house deck. Oh- and wifi. We get a good wifi from local cell towers, that is great for video conferencing, streaming etc. To arrive in Dominica, if coming from a high risk country, you will need to quarantine for a week and test negative. We offer quarantine services (costs $510 at government facilities) here -- the price is included in the monthly rate! A great deal! We are a 20 min walk from the bus - up a secluded jeep trail. Visitors here will likely want to rent a car occasionally to visit the rest of the island. It's best if you enjoy the nature here as much as we do ! We are happy to share our knowledge of gardening, permaculture, and off-grid living with you. You will be best entertained if you get involved! We can provide quality meals for you at restaurant prices, or you can do your own grocery shopping, or you can buy groceries and farm produce / eggs from us and do your own cooking. We're happy to share trips to town in our car when we go. The bathroom has a compost toilet using wood chips (no flush). (We use all organic wastes in closed loop systems.) Our solar 220V electrical system is strong, but we need to take care to not overdo it's capacity: we limit use to computers, charging devices, bathroom appliances. For any power tools, or electrical devices that will be run through the night, please ask. Though it is generally warm enough to wear shorts and t-shirt during the day all year round, due to the altitude it does get cold at night. Bring at least on set of warm clothes. A headlamp or some other form of rechargeable lighting is recommended. There are animals nearby the property: chickens and roosters, a cat, rabbits.
